Solon vs Shaker Heights Preview

Game: Solon vs Shaker Heights

During opening week for the past four seasons, the Solon Comets have had Shaker Height’s number on the football field. The two teams have met during Week One the last four years and the Comets have come out on top with victories. Tonight’s game will be the ninth time these two teams have ever met and Solon is 8-0 in the all-time series.

One year ago, the two teams met in a Saturday matinee game at Shaker and the Comets ended up winning 34-13. Comets running back Khoury Crenshaw scored three touchdowns in the game, one of which was for 65 yards. Solon dominated for most of the game and would go on to win their next few games and would eventually advance to the playoffs.

Shaker Heights struggled after that came and finished the regular season 2-8.

With lots of players returning from last season, Shaker Heights is supposed to be improved and second year head coach Jarvis Gibson has constantly preached for his players “to get the job done.” Gibson has top prospect Donovan Munger on his offensive and defensive lines and is looking to improve on the overall record from last season. Shaker Heights was picked to finish fourth in the NOC Lake Division by the Plain Dealer.

On the other sideline, Solon will be led by head coach, Jim McQuaide, who is entering his 10th season as head coach of the Comets. McQuaide has an 84-22 overall record with the Comets and has a 44-4 record at home. With leadership in captains Drew Barksdale, George Berry, CJ Hanna, Darian Hicks and Ryan Pastor, McQuaide will have a lot of leaders to help this team succeed on the field.

Shaker Heights will roll into Inwood Drive to take on the Comets in Solon, which has not happened since 2010 when Solon shut out Shaker 35-0. McQuaide understands that the Comets “need to start out on a high note” and that the Comets “need to do what [they] do best, running and hitting, to be successful.”
