Monsters Slump Could Cost Them The Playoffs

The Lake Erie Monsters have struggled in their past four games. They have lost two of those games, lost in overtime in another and lost in a shootout during these past four games. It has been a struggle and the Monsters are currently sitting ninth in the conference.

Prior to St. Patrick’s Day, the Monsters were currently eighth in the conference and looking forward to another playoff birth. It would be the second playoff birth in franchise history and the Monsters are slowing seeing it slip away with this losing streak.

Most recently, the Monsters have struggled against the Chicago Wolves with a 2-1 shootout loss this past week and a 3-2 loss last night in Cleveland. During last night’s loss, the Monsters gave up powerplay goals the Wolves had struggled to obtain during most of the regular season. The Monsters proved earlier in the week they can keep up with the Wolves but giving up too many powerplay goals last night proved to be costly.

This Monsters team can play well enough to make the playoffs. Cedrick Desjardins has proven to be a solid goaltender for the Monsters and backup Gerald Coleman has been a pleasant surprise since being called up a few months ago. The Monsters do have veteran leaders in Ryan Stoa and Greg Mauldin and with a couple of good lines, this team has what it takes to earn that final playoff spot.

The Monsters have had their ups and downs this season and a playoff birth would create more local interest and excitement in the team. Just one year ago, sports fans took notice that the Monsters were in the playoffs and Game 7 against their first round schedule drew lots of fans inside the building. Fans noticed that the Monsters were fighting for a championship and eager to find out if the journey would continue.
