What Is Going On With the Blue Jackets?

This was supposed to be a breakout season for the Columbus Blue Jackets. With several acquisitions in the offseason to help boost the offense and improve the defense, the Blue Jackets were supposed to be a better team this season and have a chance to contend.

After a month into the season, it is not going as planned and the Jackets only have two wins on the year.

Early on, the Jackets were hit with injuries to Kristian Huselius and Jeff Carter that could hinder the offense, however, the team has struggled scoring goals. The team has difficulty getting offense going even with Rick Nash on the ice and it has made it difficult for them to win. Lines keep getting changed by head coach Scott Arniel but nothing seems to be working.

As far as the goaltending goes, Steve Mason has struggled for the Jackets and the defense in front of him has not provided much help. The team parted ways with Pascal Laclaire a few seasons ago thinking Mason was a better choice, however, Mason has not lived to the hype. The defense has not provided much help in front and something is wrong if the Blue Jackets give up nine goals to the Flyers one evening and six against the Blackhawks not too long after. Rumor has it the Blue Jackets may make a trade for Evgeni Nabokov and a deal was supposedly close to happening early on Friday.

Fingers have been pointed at General Manager Scott Howson and head coach Scott Arniel since the debacle began. Rumors have circulated about both being fired and whether or not that will make a difference is in question. The team could simply hire within for an interim head coach or bring in a veteran coach to lead the team for the regular season. Bringing in a new general manager will force plans to change again and possibly lead to more losing.

The Blue Jackets have struggled and it is early in the season, however, the answer to get out of this rough start needs to be found quickly.
