Former Cleveland Indian Ryan Garko agrees to one-year deal with Seattle Mariners | Cleveland Sports News: cleveland.com –

After being denied a contract renewal from the San Francisco Giants, former Indians first baseman Ryan Garko signed a one year contract with the Seattle Mariners yesterday. The contract is worth $550,000 and Garko could earn more money if he becomes a regular player and performs well.

When dealt to the San Francisco Giants, it seemed as if Garko had difficulty adjusting to the National League. Garko only managed 12 RBIs in 40 games with the Giants and didn’t have the benefit of playing as a designated hitter in the National League. Garko seemed to be more comfortable while with the Indians as he was able to benefit from being able to play first base at certain times or serve as a designated hitter.

Garko may be inconsistent as a player but should be a decent fit with the Mariners. The Mariners were in need of a right handed hitter and someone who could easily serve as a DH if needed. Garko fits both needs perfectly and signing him to a one-year deal won’t put the Mariners at much risk.
