Sandy Alomar-one of a kind

While playing catcher for the Cleveland Indians, Sandy Alomar was always a class act on and off the field. It was rare for Alomar to have a bad game at or behind the plate and he was one of the mainstays on the team during the Indians glory years of the mid-1990s. Alomar was always smiling in and out of the dugout and was nice to young fans who politely asked for his autograph.

Indians fans were ecstatic when Alomar was named first base coach of the club this past winter not too long after Manager Manny Acta was hired. Alomar had been bouncing around from team-to-team after the Indians parted ways with him as a player years ago and was on the New York Mets coaching staff when the job was offered to him. After Alomar was hired, many friends wrote in to me how he and Omar Vizquel were their favorite players during that era and how classy Alomar was towards the Indians faithful.

Hiring Alomar will help the younger players on the team develop and understand the excitement fans will bring into the ballpark if the team wins. Alomar knows what it takes to play well in the major leagues and will help many of the young catchers in the system improve their game in his second role as a catching instructor. Alomar played with some of the best Indians teams during that time and will help the players develop.
