Lake Erie Wins Big in Front of Monster Crowd

Good Mornings Sports Fans!

When the Cleveland Cavaliers acquired Shaquille O’Neal this past summer, the team knew Shaq would be a draw for additional ticket sales. Last night, the Lake Erie Monsters management witnessed how powerful Shaq’s image was in terms of drawing fans into games.

Shaq did not make a physical appearance at last night’s game but those wanting a special edition bobblehead of the NBA star in a Monsters jersey did. In fact, 18,626 fans showed up in hopes of getting one of the 10,000 Shaq bobbleheads available. Those who arrived late were did not get a bobblehead, however, fans were not disappointed with the outcome of the game.

Tied with with :39 left in overtime, Monsters left winger Justin Mercier found the back of the net with a wrist shot right off the edge of the faceoff circle for the 5-4 victory. It was Mercier’s second goal of the game and one to remember in front of a huge crowd.

Mercier’s goal in overtime was not only a victory but a sigh of relief for Monsters fans, players and coaches. After going up 4-1 in the third period, the Monsters became sluggish on defense as the Stars answered with three goals in the final several minutes of the period to tie it up. The Monsters at that point were playing not to lose and ended up losing the lead as a result.

With the victory, the Monsters record improves to 21-20-0-4. Going into December, the Monsters did not have double digit wins with only eight victories at that point. Going from eight victories to 21 over the course of a month is impressive and the Monsters coaching staff should be praised for their efforts. The team looked as if they weren’t anywhere near a playoff spot just over a month ago and now are in arm’s reach of that goal.

That’s it for now. Keep it real.
