Cavaliers continue win streak against Rockets, Monsters pound the Marlies

Good Morning Sports Fans!

Despite a slow start, the Cleveland Cavaliers continued their winning streak last night with a 108-83 victory over the Houston Rockets. Lebron James finished the night with 29 points while fellow starters Mo Williams finished with 20 points and Shaquille O’Neal had 13 points. Off the bench, Zydrunas Illgauskus played a key role with 12 points off the bench while teammates Anderson Varejao and Daniel Gibson both finished with 7 points.

In the first quarter, the Cavaliers started out slow and only managed four points within the first three minutes of the ball game. The Cavaliers, who have struggled on defense at times this season, had difficulty defending Rockets guard Aaron Brooks as the Rockets went up by as much as 11 points in the first quarter. The Cavaliers eventually took a timeout and with the help of Shaq penetrating down below and Illgauskus coming off the bench, Cleveland was to catch up to the Rockets.

It wasn’t until the third quarter that the Cavaliers fans saw on Christmas Day began to emerge again. Within the first four minutes of the second quarter, the Lebron James and Mo Williams started draining three point shots to help the Cavaliers extend their lead. By this time, the Cavaliers defense picked up as Aaron Brooks, Trevor Ariza and several of the other Rockets players started to cool off. The Cavaliers started getting more physical underneath the boards and outrebounded the Rockets. Those rebounds led to more opportunities and the Cavaliers were able to come away with the victory.

Even though the Cavaliers had a slow start, they showed how far they have come this season by pulling ahead the way they did in the third quarter. The Cavaliers started to make three shots on a consistent basis, got more physical underneath the boards and created more opportunities for themselves. The Cavaliers didn’t panic early on in the ball game and once they relaxed, we started to see a Cavaliers team that was confident and knew they could win the game.

Moving from the basketball court to center ice, the Lake Erie Monsters continued their weekend pound of the Toronto Marlies with a 7-0 victory last night in Toronto. Right from the start, the Monsters had this game as two goals by Darren Haydar and scores from Brian Willisie and Cedric McNicholl gave the Monsters a 4-0 lead after the end of the first period.

In the second period, McNicholl would add on another goal to put the Monsters up 5-0. The Monsters continued the plunge in the third period as Ryan Stoa and Ray Macias both found the back of the net to complete the 7-0 victory. Monsters netminder Tyler Weiman finished the night with the shutout and 32 saves.

The Monsters had a rough start to the season but are really starting to play well as a team. It could be motivation to try and make it to the NHL or just things falling into place but the team is winning and has become more exciting to follow. Tyler Weiman has been solid in net for the Monsters and Darren Haydar seems to have found his scoring touch again. If the Monsters keep this up, this could be a great team coming down the stretch.

That’s it for now. Keep it real.
